A memoir cowritten by Squier with Edwin Hamilton Davis, another archaeologist, "Ancient Monuments of the Mississippi Valley," about prehistoric mound builders of North America was included in the first Smithsonian "Contributions to Knowledge" publication, which was printed in 1848. Squier also led an expedition to islands near Nicaragua in December, 1849. In 1850 he shipped five stone monuments found on the island of Zapatero to the Smithsonian.
