PrintThe following sums are appropriated: for compensation of keepers, watchmen, and laborers responsible for the preservation of the collections of the Exploring Expedition, $3,450; for contingent expenses, $200; for suitable cases to receive the collections of the Exploring Expedition, and others, in geology and mineralogy, belonging to the U.S. now in the Patent Office, $15,000; and for the expense of the transfer of these collections to the Smithsonian Institution, and the permanent arrangement of the cases, $2,000. With this legislation, the Smithsonian assumes responsibility for the national collections.
