This accession contains materials related to all the documents published in volumes 1-10 of "The Papers of Joseph Henry" as well as most of those considered for publication. For each document, an envelope was created to keep all materials related to that document. The envelopes held facsimiles of original documents and related correspondence along with transcriptions, research notes, editorial notes and drafts, and photocopies of articles or other items used for research. Facsimiles, transcriptions of published documents, and research photocopies from widely available sources have been discarded. Research materials related to Joseph Henry or the Smithsonian Institution have been transferred to the office of the Smithsonian Institution Archives' Institutional History Division or to the Smithsonian Institution Archives' research file. The materials in this accession are arranged chronologically with a small number of undated documents at the end. Prior to 1986, for documents in volumes 1-5 and some in volume 6, correction sheets were used by the Henry Papers editors for indicating to typists where corrections were needed in transcriptions. These sheets have been retained as part of the materials described above for documents dated 1798 to October 3, 1833. Correction sheets for most of the remaining documents have been discarded, but a sampling has been preserved and arranged in order of control number. The control number is the unique number assigned to each document in the Joseph Henry Papers database.
